How to Remodel a Small Bathroom

October 10, 2019

When my husband and I moved into our current home four years ago, I knew I wanted to renovate the bathrooms. Although the bathrooms in our home were fairly new, they just weren’t to our taste. Following some planning, I decided to take on the project of designing my first home project and I have to say, I think it turned out pretty amazing. After a few weeks of work with the help of a great contractor, the final result was pretty jaw dropping.

Guest Bathroom Before:

As you can see the before was pretty basic and a typical new house build style bathroom. Tiles were beige and really no attention to detail. The vanity was actually brown, however I had painted it white when we moved in. I am not a fan of dark wood cabinets so by painting it white that helped lighten up the feel of the bathroom.

Here’s a before from another angle (bathrooms are so hard to photograph):

As you can see, the light fixture and the medicine cabinet had to go! Both were outdated and just a big eye sore! If you look closely, you could notice the white paint was starting to chip off the vanity and the original brown color of the vanity was visible. In addition, the same beige floor tiling was used as a baseboard trim to boarder the entire bathroom.

Guest Bathroom After:

Ta-Da! What a difference right? I’ve always been a classic style kinda girl and I wanted to display that in our bathroom in some way, but I also wanted a trendy/modern touch. I think this ended up being a pretty good blend of the two.

I decided to keep the toilet and bathtub since they were both in great condition and helped to keep the price of the bathroom renovation down. To help conceal the shower we just added a tension rod, shower curtain and gold hooks. It makes the room feel so much nicer!

The main focal point is the vanity and I immediately fell in love with this one. It was the biggest splurge in the space but being a small bathroom it was worth it! The design and color are beautiful and the marble top is gorgeous! I then chose this faucet as the finishing touch for the vanity and it adds the perfect amount of shine to the space – like a piece of jewelry for a room!

I swapped the existing mirror with this one from Target. Then I replaced the light fixture to give a much more updated look. I added a mirrored vanity tray, however not sure if I will move it around somewhere else. How cute is the little faux sage basket?

Where the medicine cabinet was, I added framed art and to finish off the main wall, I will add this decorative wall shelf above the toilet. On the opposite wall, next to the shower, I placed a wooden ladder to hang towels.

Did you notice my dachshund hand towel? It’s meant for the kitchen, but I placed it here for the photos! If you’re a dachshund lover then you NEED this hand towel!

Champagne bronze hardware keeps the color palette vibes and tie into the metals on the sink and mirror. This adorable grass woven basket compliments the Moroccan inspired floor tiles.

The Subway tile adds a classic feel, while the mosaic floor tiles tie in with the vanity and add a modern touch. I recently visited Morocco and the tile work there is incredible. I think my love of Moroccan mosaics and tiles had an influence in my design for the floors in this bathroom.

And just like that, we already have our first guest!

So that’s it!  What do you think?

Do you have a favorite part of the bathroom or product from this renovation?  I would love to hear about it in the comments!

I hope you enjoyed this post—it feels great to introduce you to my start on the home blogging scene, and it’s just a taste of what’s to come in 2020!

  1. Its amazing how just a little upgrading can look so good! I really like the new flooring, especially compared to what was there before, and it probably took a time to install it but it was totally worth it. Nice job with the new vanity too!

    1. Thank you so much! I am so happy with the outcome of the bathroom renovation. It was totally worth it!

  2. We are in the middle of one bathroom renovation and we seem to be on the right track according to your advice and tips! We totally agree for your choice of vanity, it’s a main focal point which we consider to have it now and also, our outdated toilet in the bathroom needs to go!. A complete renovation is stressful at the best of times and we would look for some good deals on a vanity on Wayfair or in some stores near Easton ma
